Occupying a lovely spot overlooking the Nam Khan River, Apsara serves fine Western and Eastern cuisine, ranging from baguette sandwiches for lunch to elegant set dinners featuring fresh fish and meat dishes such as tajine of young goat with braised prunes and couscous or grilled fillet of buffalo. There's an extensive top wine list, and the quiet location is an excellent place for a leisurely meal. In high season you may need a reservation.

Auberge and Cafe 3 Nagas
The tom hom pak e-leup, betel leaf soup with dried buffalo, or the mok het, steamed mushrooms in coconut mousse, are just two of local specialties served in one of Luang Prabang's most appealing eateries. The atmospheric restaurant is opposite the 3 Nagas Hotel. They also do Western dishes on the hotel side of the site, under the same management.

Sakkalin Rd., Box 722, Luang Prabang, Laos

Indochina Spirit
For a hearty meal, head to this eclectic Thai-run restaurant housed in a 1920s residence that once belonged to a royal physician, where a selection of Lao specialties costs just $6. Start with an appetizer of Mekong seaweed or banana-flower salad, followed by steak. Italian-style pastas and pizza are also on the menu, and delicious pancakes are served for breakfast.
Address:
50–51 Ban Wat That, Luang Prabang, Laos

Joma Bakery Cafe
Canadians run this cheap, friendly self-service restaurant, where an in-house bakery turns out delicious pastries, pizzas, salads, and French bread. The homemade soups are excellent, as are the breakfast burritos and wraps.

Kitchen by the Mekong at Xiengthong Palace
This quaint Mekong riverside restaurant in the former royal residence (now a luxury boutique hotel) serves up some excellent food in a charming and serene location. Try the divine Mekong Boat, which is a salad with croutons, bacon, and feta cheese tossed in a vinaigrette and wrapped in a toasted Mekong seaweed (specialty of Luang Prabang) boat. Entrees include duck Shiraz, New Zealand lamb, and Tasmanian salmon (which is served with mushroom risotto and sundried tomato salsa). Lao dishes such as whisky-flavored buffalo steak are also on the menu, and make sure to leave room for dessert. The ebony chip chocolate mousse heated with Bailey's cream is particularly lovely.

Kounxoau Road, Luang Prabang, Laos

L'Elephant Restaurant Français
When you can't face another serving of rice or spicy sauces, it's time to walk down the hill from the Villa Santi to this pleasant corner restaurant. The menu is traditional French, with a bit of Lao influence, especially when it comes to the ingredients. Consider, for example, the chevreuil au poivre vert (local venison in a pepper sauce). There are always the three-course set meal and several daily specials, which usually include fish fresh from the Mekong. Seating is available in the bright, airy dining room or on the sidewalk, behind a barrier of plants.
